Hispanic Branch Library - COMING SOON!
1398 SW 1st Street
In the fall of 2005, the Miami-Dade Public Library System, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Bruno Barriero, Miami-Dade County’s Department of Homeless Trust and Carrfour Supportive Housing – a non-profit organization that provides permanent housing and support services to formerly homeless individuals and families - joined forces to create an innovative partnership that maximizes the “mixed use” approach to development and construction. This collaboration combined functions with like-minded entities in an effort to create the best use of public facilities during tough economic times. This partnership formed what is the first of its kind east of the Mississippi and the only one that combines a state-of-the-art library with affordable and supportive housing known as the Villa Aurora Apartments.
Carrfour Supportive Housing had originally set out to renovate a two-story apartment building but when those plans ran into problems, Commissioner Bruno Barreiro intervened and suggested that the Miami-Dade Public Library System relocate an existing branch, which was in need of major repairs, into the Villa Aurora facility. The original structure was razed and the 12,000-square foot branch library was constructed on the ground floor of what is now a 76-unit complex (studios to four bedroom units). |
