Celebrate Asian-Pacific Month at the Miami-Dade Public Library
(MIAMI, May 14, 2008) – The Miami-Dade Public Library System will host a special celebration for Asian-Pacific Month at the West Kendall Regional Library – 10201 Hammocks Blvd – on Saturday, May 24, from 11 am – 4 pm with an exciting line-up of programs, hosted by.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe A. Martinez who will kick-off the day.
Events include a martial arts demonstration, Chinese story time, Asian crafts, musical performances and the announcement of the Asian-Pacific Month essay contest winners. Henna artist Kathleen Wright will demonstrate this ancient body art and guests are invited to come dressed in their favorite ethnic attire.
May was chosen as Asian Pacific American Month to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
