LIBRARY SYSTEM TO HOLD GROUNDBREAKING FOR FUTURE NORTHEAST BRANCH LIBRARY
(MIAMI, FEBRUARY 1, 2012) –The community is invited to join Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Chairman Joe A. Martinez, Commissioner Sally Heyman and City of Aventura Mayor Susan Gottlieb for a groundbreaking ceremony of the future Northeast Branch Library on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 10 a.m. at 2930 Aventura Blvd, Aventura, Florida.
The new building will be constructed on the site of the previous facility which was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005 and later demolished. At more than 26,000 square feet, it will include an exterior covered deck, vestibule, two courtyards, a 100-seat auditorium, two conference rooms, a coffee shop and separate reading rooms for Adults, Young Adults and Children. The library is seeking to attain a LEED gold certification as a result of energy-saving components which include the use of green materials and photovoltaic panels. The building will have a rain screen façade which will help to solve energy and waterproofing issues as well as providing a surface for patrons to be able to read and to get information about the green movement and the Florida environment. The design will allow the library to offer an educational way to view and experience the natural landscape. The pathways and plaza are located around an enhanced retention pond which will contain native plants and wildlife. Interpretive signs will be located in certain areas that describe the plants, wildlife and enhanced drainage systems. The green areas are used to educate the public about their natural ecosystems, native plant material, wildlife, captured rainwater and the principles of a Florida Friendly Landscape – which is now part of the Miami Dade County Landscape Ordinance.
