S.M.A.R.T. stands for Science, Math and Reading Tutoring and is the library's response to overwhelming requests from both parents and children for homework assistance provided in a group setting.
Registration for the up coming 2008-2009 Program is from June 9, 2008 to July 7, 2008.
Who is eligible?
- Any child in kindergarten through 12th grade. Tutors are available in the subjects of mathematics, reading and science.
How do I sign-up?
- Registration forms will be available at each library branch from June 9, 2008 through July 7, 2008. Placements at each library will be on a first come first served basis. Each child will be registered for the program and assigned a tutoring time at that branch.
When and where is it offered?
- From Saturday, October 4, 2008 through Saturday May 16, 2009.
- At this time tutoring is not offered during summer school.
- Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.* at every branch in the library system with the following exceptions:
- *1. Model City Branch Library – Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p. m.
- *2. Miami Lakes, West Dade Regional and West Kendall Regional will have additional Saturday hours from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- · S.M.A.R.T. will be closed** at all Branches on Nov. 29, Dec. 20, Dec. 27, 2008, Jan. 3, Apr 4, and Apr 11, 2009 with the following exception:
- **Model City will not have S.M.A.R.T. on Nov. 26, Dec. 24, Dec 31, 2008 and Apr. 8, 2009.
How much does it cost and what do I need to bring with me?
- The tutoring service is free!
- Please bring any textbooks and written assignments from the teacher plus whatever else was sent home with you to work on, or other materials your child has questions about.
- The tutor may ask you to provide special supplies to better work with your child.
What format is used?
- Tutoring is done in a small group setting. Students must be able to follow directions and work independently. Each child is assigned a maximum one (1) hour block of tutoring time weekly. Students are expected to arrive on time and no later than fifteen (15) minutes past the hour assigned.
Who are the tutors?
- Our tutors have been carefully screened and are all experienced educators. We have hired the most qualified of a wide field of applicants.
