Through this program, we teach children that there is no “good” or “bad” food. Instead, all foods are good for different aspects of your body and mind in moderation. Children are empowered to take snacking into their own hands, preparing snacks that do not require any cooking and that are easy (and safe!) for them to make for themselves at home. This gives them a say in what they eat and teaches them about the responsibility of feeding themselves and others. We also teach them the importance of having regular snacks and trying new foods, as well as, using basic kitchen tools.

In August of 2024, the Cataloging unit of the Miami-Dade Public Library System implemented a Spanish language controlled vocabulary for patron use in its online catalog. The first sign of need came in 2020 as the unit began assessing its use of up-to-date controlled vocabularies. Its previous source, Bilindex (a controlled vocabulary that was created and maintained in Oakland, California) was no longer available or searchable. Another sign of need came from staff feedback. In committee work and through conversations, Librarians often mentioned the difficulty of using the catalog. Patrons were searching but not finding the materials they were expecting. In response, the vocabulary of the Spanish National Library (BNE) was chosen to replace Bilindex for future in-house and vendor cataloging. The overall purpose of this program is to improve access to the Spanish language materials of the Miami-Public Library System for all Spanish speaking communities of Miami-Dade County.

The program was initiated at the South Dade Regional Library in 2015. Such was the success of the program, that in 2018 it was expanded to the North Dade Regional Library. The program was again popularly received. Nevertheless, while the service was offered at the northern and southernmost ends of Miami-Dade County, the more densely populated central and western portions of Miami-Dade County did not have library passport services available in their vicinity. This led the Miami-Dade Public Library System to expand the program to the West Kendall Regional Library. The site quickly became the most popular passport acceptance facility in the library. Passport Acceptance is a much-needed service for a community like Miami-Dade County, one with a significant concentration of international residents.
