There are many types of items accessible to you through the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Digital Collections, including scrapbooks, dime novels, photographs, ephemera and documents. We scan these objects in our flatbed scanners and the Bookeye 4 scanner we mentioned in January's blog post.
Sometimes if an item is oversized or framed and can’t fit in the scanners, we opt to have it photographed. Our photographer takes high quality images for FADGI (Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative) compliant masters and then edits a derivative copy that’s displayed on our website.
Many of these items are from the MDPLS Permanent Art Collection, such as framed photographs, drawings, etchings, and artist books among others.
When an object is framed, our photographer uses a wall mounted easel to take photographs.
In cases where the object is oversized and unframed, she lays them on a flat surface and photographs them from above.
The Digital Collections team has also started to visit all 50 MDPLS branches to take photographs of the artwork from the MDPLS Permanent Art Collection installed in those locations.
We also take photographs of 3D objects in our various collections, like these from the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Projects & Exhibitions collection and the Purvis Young collection.
