Anticipation and excitement filled the air in July 1985 as the Miami-Dade Public Library System, the Metropolitan Dade Board of County Commissioners, and the Dade County Library Advisory Board (as each was known then), and the community came together to celebrate the grand opening of the new Main Library at the Metro-Dade Cultural Center in downtown Miami. The library opened with a special evening preview party, which included tours of the library, on July 18 followed by a celebration marking its official opening to the public on July 19.
The festivities began with a captivating parade, featuring a procession of trucks, mounted police, and the lively melodies of a calliope. However, it was the symbolic passing of the last 1,000 books from the original Main Library at Bayfront Park to the new location that truly captured the essence of this milestone occasion. A human chain was formed, linking the old library to the new one as each book was handed from one person to another. This powerful display embodied the spirit of knowledge and community, signifying a seamless transition from the past to the future. And then, amidst the excitement and joy, a ribbon was ceremoniously cut, officially opening the doors to a world of discovery and imagination in the heart of the city.

The construction of the new Main Library was made possible with Decade of Progress bond funds. It was designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson and was the joint venture of Johnson/Burgee, Architects and Connell Metcalf and Eddy, Architects, Engineers and Planners.
During the nearly four decades since its opening, Main Library has served as a vital hub of knowledge, engagement, and intellectual exploration and has presented an extensive number of events and programs, such as talks, lectures, concerts, workshops, fairs, and festivals. Notable visitors like legendary heavyweight boxer and activist Muhammad Ali and renowned contemporary artists such as Ed Ruscha and Christo have left their mark on Main Library’s history.
Today, Main Library remains steadfast as a vibrant and essential institution, empowering individuals, nurturing the community, and supporting the advancement of knowledge and understanding.
