Founded in 1923, the Coral Gables Woman's Club has been a central part of the City Beautiful and has served the community for almost as long as the City of Coral Gables has been in existence. Located at 1001 East Ponce de Leon Boulevard, the coral limestone building, known as the "Grande Dame," was constructed through the direct efforts of the Club's members. Working together with its supporters, the Woman's Club raised $10,000 to build the now-historic building, which also housed the Coral Gables Library for more than 30 years starting in 1937, before it joined the Miami-Dade Public Library System and moved to a newly constructed branch location on Segovia Street in 1969 where it still resides today.
The Coral Gables Woman's Club's rich history of community service has only grown stronger over the years. In 1939, the Club founded the Coral Gables Children’s Dental Clinic, which has provided dental care to over 40,000 children whose families cannot afford costly dental care and are not eligible for public health programs. As a self-funded organization, the Woman's Club has been involved in many activities to keep the dental clinic going, including organizing and performing in extravagant cabaret shows over the years.
Today, the classic cabaret fundraisers have been replaced with galas, auctions and teas, and the Woman's Club also allows the public to rent the facilities for private occasions, such as weddings, birthday parties and holiday events.
As the Coral Gables Woman's Club celebrates its centennial anniversary this year, the Miami-Dade Public Library System has been awarded a grant from the Coral Gables Community Foundation to document, preserve and digitize materials from the Woman's Club archives. Make sure to visit our website regularly as we continue to add more material to the Coral Gables Woman's Club digital collection and delve further into its history and its contributions to the community.
