Celebrating Historic Preservation Month

5/3/23

By: C. B.

Miami is a treasure trove of spectacular locales and experiences and notably is home to several locations listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In honor of Historic Preservation Month in May, we are spotlighting some of the many places spread across Miami that stand as icons of its past and present.

The Miami Biltmore Hotel and Country Club made its debut on January 15, 1926, and has since become Coral Gables’ most distinguished historic landmark. Developed by George E. Merrick, the iconic hotel has become almost synonymous with the city and was the centerpiece of Merrick’s vision of Coral Gables as "The City Beautiful." The 271-room hotel and resort still exudes the same elegance today as it did almost 100 years ago.

Merrick’s grand plan for the city of Coral Gables also gifted us with the remarkable Venetian Pool. Originally opened as the Venetian Casino in 1924, it is a display of the Mediterranean aesthetic he had planned for the city and is the only swimming pool included in the National Register of Historic Places.

Nestled near the intersection of I-95 and US 1, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is one of Miami’s most beautifully preserved and historic  landmarks. Originally the villa of businessman James Deering, Vizcaya was constructed with the goal of creating an oasis that would conserve the natural environment surrounding it. Today, its preservation efforts have kept Vizcaya as an immaculate representation of its original vision.

To explore more images of these and many other historic locations in Miami, be sure to check out the Gleason Waite Romer Photographs Collection where you can see snapshots from Miami’s earliest days to the present, allowing you to discover the city’s rich history through images.
