From Paper to Pixels: A Look at the Evolution of MDPLS Library Cards

9/25/23

By: C. B.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time to invite residents to discover the benefits of having a library card and encourage those without one to apply. A library card provides access to a vast array of resources including books, eBooks, audiobooks, movies, online newspapers, tutoring, research databases, and more!

We’ve come a long way since the days of cardboard and typewritten cards. Today, you can enjoy vibrant card designs, handy keychain options, specially designed cards, and even eCards (electronic cards). Our Digital Collections feature some of our vintage and newer library cards, checked-out materials due date cards, and more, giving us a nostalgic glimpse into the past and showing the evolution of our library cards. Do any of these look familiar to you?

Remember overdue fines? They’re a thing of the past. Today, we’re a fine-free library system. Cardholders no longer have to worry about late fees, but will be charged for unreturned, lost, or damaged items.
