Half of the exhibitions in the Miami-Dade Public Library System's Digital Collections have been created with artwork from the Library's Permanent Art Collection, which maintains over 7,000 pieces by local artists and those whose work was inspired by Miami or was featured in a local exhibit.
From the iconic Surrounded Islands by Christo and Jean Claude to the conceptual and performative art of Fernando García, the art collections depict the artists' concerns about discrimination, marginalization, environmental degradation and immigration, as well as their hopes, dreams and fantasies. Some additional artists in the Digital Collections include Emilio Sánchez, Gigi Aramescu and Purvis Young.

Both the Digital Collections and Permanent Art Collection are reference resources for artists, teachers, students and the general public that reflect Miami’s cultural composition and chronicle its artistic and social history. To give the public access to a wider range of content, Digital Collections has expanded the Library’s digitization project to include feature articles and criticism in English and Spanish about Miami's vibrant arts scene through a partnership with The Arts & Business Council of Miami.
The Miami-Dade Public Library System is now home to the Digital Collections Artburst Archive, featuring dozens of articles from ArtburstMiami.com, which The Arts & Business Council of Miami created 15 years ago to serve as a media hub for coverage of the visual arts, dance, music, theater and independent film. In time, the Library’s Digital Collection Artburst Archive's searchable database will house thousands of articles and pictures that represent the entirety of the content ArburstMiami.com has produced throughout its history.
Despite a shrinking market for media arts coverage, ArtburstMiami.com has continued to thrive because of the continued support of The Arts & Business Council of Miami, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Office of Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners.
