Art at the Library

11/21/22

By: M. M.

Timed to coincide with Art Basel and other art shows taking place in Miami during autumn, the Highlights exhibition at the Miami Beach Regional Library showcases the wide-ranging use of materials by artists whose works are a part of the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Permanent Art Collection. On exhibit from November 14, 2022 through February 9, 2023, the framed pieces and objects highlight the work of artists Damian Rojo, Tom Schmitt, Judith Page, Valeria Yamamoto, Purvis Young, Edwin Villasmil and many others. (The opening reception and program was held on Wednesday, November 30 from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m.)

Many of the pieces featured can be found in the Library’s Digital Collections, which offer the public a unique opportunity to view these priceless works of art from the comfort of home. The digital interface allows users to zoom in on the images, providing a clearer presentation of the intricacies of each piece – including the elaborate collages of artist Gustavo Oviedo. (To zoom, click the double arrow at the top right corner of the image and adjust the size using the mouse wheel or click on the image.)

Individual collections can display the artwork from a single creator, including pieces in a series like Edwin Villasmil’s Bible-inspired El Cantar de los Cantares (Song of Songs), part of which is included in Highlights.

Being able to find documentation such as photographs, articles, sketchbooks or old exhibit catalogs, helps to contextualize and better understand individual pieces by artists like Purvis Young, whose work includes the use of discarded library books.

Make sure not to miss all the great content available in the Digital Collections. From 3D-scanned objects to rare books and DIY postcards for Valentine’s Day, there is something exciting and wonderful for everyone.
