About the Presenters
Susan Weiss
With 35 years of experience at Florida International University in North Miami, Susan Weiss served as a reference librarian, providing general assistance to library patrons. Her interest in local Miami and South Florida led her to collect and organize local documents for the FIU North Miami library. In 1996, her book "Miami Bibliography" was published by the Historical Association of Southern Florida (now HistoryMiami). Susan has been actively involved with the Arch Creek Trust for forty years.
Ximena Valdivia
Currently serving as a Cataloging and Metadata Librarian at Florida International University (FIU), Ximena holds a BS in Library Science from the Metropolitan University of Technology in Santiago, Chile, and a Master of Arts in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida. Currently pursuing her Masters of Arts in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at FIU, Ximena is responsible for original and complex copy cataloging, creating metadata to maximize the discovery of digital content, and providing authority control for library materials and collections, with a special focus on Special Collections. She has previously worked with Barry University and the University of Miami in various capacities, contributing significantly to historical collections.
About Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade
The Miami Pioneers is Dade County's legacy historical organization, originally founded in 1936 by prominent settlers and business leaders who arrived in Miami in the pioneer era before the year 1900. The Natives of Dade was incorporated in 1986 by a group of local history enthusiasts born in Dade County. The groups merged on July 8, 2002.
