Cuba Before and After explores memory and homeland through a collection of oil on canvas paintings that captures the landscape, people, and culture of Cuba throughout its many moments. From the Cuban War of Independence to the Revolution of 1959, Cuba’s history is one that is defined by turbulent change and the constant search for freedom, and Yolanda Blanco represents this in her work as she captures those many moments in the past that are integral to understanding Cuba’s present. Among this are depictions of the rich culture that is ever evolving, with its rich folklore and music capturing the essence of what Cuba represents and how it continues to adapt. The colorful flora and fauna burst from the canvas in bright hues of paint, drawing its audience in to engage with the beauty of the tropical Caribbean island.
In this richness, Cuba Before and After creates an image of Cuba that is deeply personal. The artist aims to bring the audience into her own experiences of Cuba as someone who had to experience exile from her homeland. Paintings such as Buscando Libertad shows Cuba as it is today and the struggles its people face.
Yolanda Blanco was born in Havana, Cuba. She moved with her family to Miami, Florida, in 1966. She worked as she studied and after graduating, worked for Miami Dade County in different positions before retiring after 32 years of service.
For the past 12 years, Yolanda has dedicated herself to painting professionally. Inspired by a friend, she began taking painting classes and ended up returning to college to pursue her craft. She happened to met Alberto Pancorbo, a Spanish artist, and under his direction and private tutelage enhanced her art knowledge and skills.
Yolanda has exhibited her artwork at the Miami Dade Government Center, Ritz Carlton Hotel, Miami Beach, Hallandale Beach, Miami Dade College, International Campus, Coral Gables Museum, galleries, art fairs, and other cultural events.
