Historian Ray McGuire recounts how an area south of Miami transformed from a Biscayne Bay mangrove into a World War I army air base, now known as Chapman Field. Dedicated to Victor Chapman, the first U.S. pilot killed in the war, McGuire will explore Chapman Field's legacy through both World Wars and its lasting impact on the region. About Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade County:
The Miami Pioneers is Dade County's legacy historical organization, originally founded in 1936 by prominent settlers and business leaders who arrived in Miami in the pioneer era before the year 1900. The Natives of Dade was incorporated in 1986 by a group of local history enthusiasts born in Dade County. The groups merged on July 8, 2002.
