In the summer of ’86, Cyn. Zarco returned to Miami Beach and found a city on the verge of rejuvenation. From a $350 oceanfront studio at the Locust Apartments to a chance role on the show Miami Vice, her journey intertwined with South Beach (SoBe)’s transformation from a retirement location to a glamorous playground for artists, models and Hollywood’s elite.
As Miami’s last society columnist for The Miami News, Zarco chronicled the rise of SoBe’s cultural scene—rubbing shoulders with icons like Liz Taylor, Johnny Depp and Madonna. She also spotlighted the visionary real estate moguls who reshaped the city’s skyline. Her long-running “UpLate” column in Ocean Drive magazine captured the city’s decadent nightlife, from actor Mickey Rourke at The G-Spot to singer Prince’s electrifying Glam Slam opening.
By the early 2000s, her column titled “24/7” in Channels magazine continued the legacy, documenting the lifestyles of A-listers like George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey as they made South Beach their second home.
Through Zarco’s stories and rare photos, 86 1/2 is a firsthand account of the golden era that made Miami Beach the “city of cool.”
