Author's biography:
Alvin Pondexter was born in Tallahassee, Florida, growing up between there and Miami, Florida. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Florida A&M University (Tallahassee, Florida) in Art Education, with a minor in Fine Arts. Upon graduation, he continued with graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin (Madison, Wisconsin), earning both a Master of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts degree (recognized as the terminal degree in the Visual Arts).
He taught in the Art History and Arts Department at Florida International University (FIU) as an Adjunct Professor, teaching visual art classes and one art history course. It was at FIU that he designed a course (which he taught) in art history, “Introduction to the Visual Arts of The African World (ARH 3511). Before FIU he taught at Florida Memorial University as an Associate Professor of Visual Arts, the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. While during his tenure at FMU, he taught classes as an adjunct professor for Nova Southeastern University (NSU) at its South Miami campus, and the University of Nassau, in the Bahamas.
His works of art have been exhibited throughout Miami-Dade County, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Tallahassee Florida. In addition, he has exhibited in Madison and Milwaukee Wisconsin, and Atlanta Georgia. He has done book illustrations, one by author Otis D. Alexander, “Cicley: The Life Journey of a Great Thespian," and provided several poetic pieces in his book, “Second Coming or Second Trade-Off: Contemporary & Relevant Literature During the pandemic.”
