South East Florida Library Information Network (SEFLIN) and Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) have collaborated to create the Fearless, Mindful Youth Initiative (FMYI); a year-round, library-centered program that provides support for teenagers. FMYI is an initiative that serves as an example of how libraries can leverage their resources to help underserved youth maneuver through challenging life experiences while being afforded the opportunities to reach their full potential.
Since February 2021, SEFLIN & MDPLS have presented multimedia trainings, reading literacy, STEAM workshops (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics), book clubs, financial literacy, business finance, NASA workshops, music entertainment clubs, mentors, and role models to help teens develop in a wholistic manner across our Southeast Florida communities and around the world.
Join us on August 20 as we celebrate the accomplishments of the participants including parents, mentors, and especially, the teenagers who learned important skills and created bonds throughout the course of the year. The teens created their own films, poetry, and art, led by library staff and professional mentors. Awards will be presented to the top teen films, youth will be recognized for their participation, and a special panel discussion will feature filmmakers, a NASA scientist, music entertainment producer, poet, and banking finance manager who will talk about the importance of offering innovative workshops to teens in our community.
