MIAMI-DADE (April 23, 2026) — On Friday, April 24, at 11:30 a.m., Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the Miami-Dade Public Library System will celebrate the grand reopening of the newly renovated Lemon City Branch Library with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
This milestone marks the completion of a major renovation and modernization project designed to enhance library services, expand digital connectivity, and create a more innovative and sustainable community hub for neighborhood residents and patrons of the entire Miami-Dade Public Library System.
Upgrades and improvements include:
The Lemon City Branch Library is widely recognized as the oldest public library in Miami and one of the earliest in Miami-Dade County, with origins dating back to 1894, when it began as a small community reading room established by local residents. In 1902, the library relocated to its first dedicated wooden building on Northeast 61st Street, where it served the community for more than six decades. In 1963, that historic structure was severely damaged by a fire, leading to its closure. A new facility was subsequently constructed at the current site and opened in 1964. Since then, the branch has served generations of residents as a cornerstone of literacy, education, and community engagement in one of Miami’s historic neighborhoods.
