About the North West Film Archive
The North West Film Archive is the public home for the moving image heritage of the North West of England. Part of Manchester Metropolitan University, the Archive is based in Manchester Central Library – a beautiful library in the heart of the city.
From historical footage and home movies to newsreels and adverts, the NWFA finds, preserves and shares over 60,000 items of film and video, for public, educational and professional use.
Set up in 1977, the Archive collects moving images of any age, and on any gauge - on film, videotape, and now what we call born-digital formats. The collection itself is stored in temperature and humidity-controlled vaults and staff at the Archive have built up specialist skills in all the painstaking work of film preservation and conservation.
