The Miami Watercolor Society was founded in February 1974 by artist Peter Drew, who gathered a group of painters united by their love of watercolor. From that shared passion, the Society was born with an original charter membership of 66 artists, and its first exhibition followed just months later in November of that same year.
Fast forward fifty colorful years, and the Miami Watercolor Society has grown into a vibrant community of more than 120 members. Recently celebrating our 50th anniversary, we continue to thrive as a nonprofit organization welcoming a broad spectrum of water media painters from curious beginners to seasoned professionals.
Our mission is to inspire, educate, and share the joy and beauty of watercolor with both our members and the wider community. We do this through monthly demonstrations at our meetings, two annual juried exhibitions, monthly skill-building classes, organized paint-outs for landscape painters, two workshops each year with nationally recognized instructors, an annual art teacher workshop, a student exhibition, and a variety of community outreach programs.
Community service is at the heart of who we are. Our members generously give their time and talents to teach, mentor, and encourage an appreciation for watercolor. Through our Teacher Outreach Program, we have offered an annual hands-on watercolor workshop for Miami-Dade art teachers for twenty-five years, empowering them to bring the magic of watercolor into their classrooms. This is followed by our beloved student watercolor exhibition, for grades kindergarten through senior high school, which welcomes students and their families to a celebratory opening each year. 2025 was the 40th year of our student show.
The Miami Watercolor Society is, above all, a joyful place, a community where artists gather to learn, share, grow, and splash a little magic onto paper.
