Dance lives in every body at every age. Choreographer Pioneer Winter guides participants through gentle movement prompts exploring gesture, breath, memory, and expression. Together, we'll shape short "somapoems" — movement portraits made of body and word. No experience needed. All movement is adaptable. Older adults and elders are especially welcome. For more information, please contact the branch at 305-535-4219 or capleyb@mdpls.org. Ages 16 yrs.+
What if your body already holds a poem? In this workshop, Pioneer Winter introduces the somapoem: a short piece built from gesture, breath, memory, and language combined. Participants move through simple prompts drawn from Pioneer Winter Collective's community workshops, then find words that meet those movements, shaping a small poem through body and language. Each person creates something that reflects their own experience and way of moving in the world.
This workshop is designed for curious adults, especially those who may not have had the chance to dance before or who are returning to movement after a long time away. Older adults and elders are especially welcome. The space is built around your pace, your body, and your stories. All movement is gentle, adaptable, and participant-led, and chairs are available throughout.
Pioneer Winter is a Miami-based choreographer and the founder of Pioneer Winter Collective, an intergenerational and physically integrated dance theater company. His work brings together movement, text, and community stories to explore identity, memory, and belonging. For more information, visit https://pioneerwinter.com/.
