Library cards are free for residents in the Library taxing district. This includes unincorporated Miami-Dade County and all municipalities with the exception of Bal Harbour Village, Miami Shores and the Town of Surfside.
Residents of Hialeah, Homestead, North Miami and North Miami Beach (municipal library partners) are allowed reciprocal borrowing privileges for items owned by the Miami‑Dade Public Library System and are eligible for a free MDPLS library card. Miami-Dade County residents are eligible for a free library card from any of the municipal library partners.
Residents who live in Bal Harbour Village, Miami Shores, and the Town of Surfside may obtain a non-resident library card for an annual fee of $65.00.
Yes! Current employees of Miami‑Dade County or Jackson Public Health Trust can apply for a free library card. Teachers and school support staff who are active and regularly employed in public and private schools or group programs in Miami‑Dade County can also apply for a free card.

MDPLS branch location. Have your eCard number with you on your MDPLS mobile app or a picture of your eCard and be sure to bring a photo ID with your address or other acceptable ID, such as an employment or school ID, voter’s registration or personalized mail, so we can confirm your identity. If you would like a physical library card, we can help you with that, but it is not necessary to enjoy the full offerings of the library.
No, your MDPLS physical library card automatically gives you access to these services. There is no need to apply for an eCard. If you need assistance in obtaining your library card account number or pin number, please email

Your PIN/password is a 4‑digit number you selected at the time your library card (physical or eCard) was originally issued. Using the email address associated with your account, go to
Log In/Registerand click on Forgot your PIN/password.
Enter your library card number and check your email for a link to update your PIN. Select and confirm your new PIN/password.
