MIAMI (September 15, 2022) — The Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) is honored to have been named an Outstanding Community Partner by the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD) during their 17th annual Community Awards Luncheon on September 1st in Coral Gables. The awards recognize community organizations and individuals for their outstanding service, advocacy and philanthropic support of South Florida’s autism community.
“Congratulations to our Miami-Dade Public Library System for being recognized for its important work making our community more inclusive for all residents,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “One of the key priorities of my administration is making our county more equitable and inclusive, and I’m proud that our public libraries are at the forefront of building a more welcoming community for people of all abilities.”
The Miami-Dade Public Library System was recognized for the transformative work it has done in making its library locations autism friendly, as part of a Countywide Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Neurodiverse Inclusion Program developed in collaboration with UM-NSU CARD, as part of a resolution sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Raquel Regalado. Through the program, MDPLS has created social narratives – stories that help people better understand what to expect when visiting a library – for each of its 50 library locations along with sensory friendly spaces and programs. Additionally, over 700 library employees have completed ASD and Strategies for Inclusivity training by UM-NSU CARD, which aims to create a deeper awareness of the needs of the autism and neurodiverse community.
“We are pleased and honored to have been named an Outstanding Community Partner by UM-NSU CARD,” said Library Director Ray Baker. “It was one year ago that they designated us an Autism Friendly Partner, so it’s a great recognition of Miami-Dade County’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of neurodiverse individuals and those with autism spectrum disorder.”
“The UM-NSU CARD Community Awards were created in 2005 to recognize community leaders and partners who go the extra mile for our constituents,” said UM-NSU CARD Executive Director Dr. Michael Alessandri. “The Miami-Dade Public Library System is a great example of an organization that is providing a welcoming, compassionate and inclusive environment for individuals with ASD and related disabilities. MIAMI (July 28, 2022) — The Miami-Dade Public Library System and Miami-Dade County’s Strive305 Small Business Initiative will present their second Mogul Maker Expo on Saturday, July 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the South Dade Regional Library located at 10750 SW 211 St., Cutler Bay, FL 33189. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s Strive305 Small Business Initiative is designed to accelerate the growth of small businesses countywide and support budding entrepreneurs as they launch and grow new businesses.
“Small businesses and entrepreneurs are the backbone of our community and contribute greatly to our local economy,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “We had a tremendous response to our first Mogul Maker Expo in April, which demonstrates the importance and impact of engaging small business owners and entrepreneurs through these types of events, as well as providing them with information and resources that will help them succeed and thrive.”
The Mogul Maker Expo will include presentations by business professionals, entrepreneurs, and government officials on a variety of topics, including small business development, credit, loans, legal services, government contracts, marketing, and free resources available through Miami-Dade Public Libraries and Miami-Dade County, networking opportunities and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to have free professional headshot photos taken by the Library’s YOUmake Miami team on a first-come, first-served basis.

MIAMI (June 27, 2022) — The Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) has officially opened its summer programming, including the annual Summer Reading Challenge, Homework Help and Tutoring summer sessions and many more fun events and activities.
People of all ages can get in on the reading fun by joining the MDPLS 2022 Summer Reading Challenge now through August 13 for a chance to win great prizes. Every 30 minutes spent reading or listening to a book earns an entry into the prize drawing at the end of the challenge. Residents can attend any library programs and events, including special summer-themed programs, to earn additional entries. The 2022 Summer Reading Challenge is made possible in part by sponsors Miami Marlins, HistoryMiami Museum, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, Wendy’s and Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library.
Additionally, keeping kids and teens engaged with summer reading and learning programs helps combat “summer slide,” the loss of knowledge gained during the school year. The MDPLS Homework Help and Tutoring Program helps prevent summer learning loss with free tutoring by certified teachers in math, reading and science available through August 13 for students grades K-12. Group sessions take place on Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at 29 participating library locations and one-on-one online sessions are offered on Wednesdays from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. For more information, a list of participating library locations, and to schedule an online tutoring session, visit www.mdpls.org/tutor or call 305-375-1413.
Library cardholders who need access to the internet or a computer may borrow a Wi-Fi hotspot or Chromebook laptop or tablet with free built-in internet from any library location to take home and use for 30 days (renewable up to three times if no other customer is waiting) through the MDPLS Mobile Device Lending Program.

MIAMI (April 19, 2022) — The Miami-Dade Public Library System and Miami-Dade County’s Strive305 Small Business Initiative will present the 2022 Mogul Maker Expo on Friday, April 22 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Westchester Regional Library located at 9445 Coral Way, Miami, FL 33165. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s Strive305 Small Business Initiative is designed to accelerate the growth of small businesses countywide and support budding entrepreneurs as they launch and grow new businesses.
“Small business owners and entrepreneurs are the backbone of Miami-Dade County’s economy,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Participation in the Mogul Maker Expo, along with programming in our Strive305 Initiative, connect local small businesses and entrepreneurs to resources and information, including those available at our Miami-Dade Public Libraries. MIAMI (April 12, 2022) — The Institute of Museum and Library Services has announced that the Miami-Dade Public Library System is among 30 finalists for the 2022 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The Miami-Dade Public Library System is one of two institutions in Florida to be selected as a finalist for this award. The Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale is also a finalist.
“I am very proud of our Miami-Dade Public Library System for being named a finalist for this prestigious honor that recognizes excellence and innovation in the best of our nation’s museums and libraries,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “It is a testament to the great leadership and incredible work of our dedicated library team in providing essential services and resources that touch people’s lives and help our community thrive.”

Launched during National Library Week 2022, Chromebook laptops lending will provide residents with internet connectivity and equitable access to technology
MIAMI (April 7, 2022) — The Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) is now offering 2,000 Chromebook laptops with free built-in internet access for checkout as part of its Community Internet Connectivity Initiative Mobile Device Lending Program to help provide equitable access to the internet and technology for all Miami-Dade County residents. The Chromebooks lending launch coincides with National Library Week (April 3-9, 2022), which this year encourages residents to “Connect With Your Library” to access technology, resources and services that meet their needs and explore the endless opportunities available to them through their local public library.
“Internet and technology access are essential for everyone. Without it, residents face an uphill climb to advance at school and work, and are at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing basic services,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Having Chromebook laptops available as part of the Community Internet Connectivity Initiative at our Miami-Dade Public Libraries creates one more tool to help narrow the digital divide for individuals and families, by offering access to technology that would otherwise be unattainable.”
Library cardholders can borrow a Chromebook laptop with built-in internet access and Wi-Fi capability from any library location for up to 30 days at a time and renew it up to three times after the original due date if no other customers are waiting. The Chromebooks also come preloaded with several Library apps and bookmarks for enjoying eBooks, eAudiobooks, movies, music and more, plus a variety of social media, meeting and entertainment apps.
“Miami-Dade Libraries continue to provide creative ways for our residents to have access to technology inside and outside of our libraries,” said Library Director Ray Baker. “Adding Chromebook laptops to our Mobile Device Lending Program is another option to help residents to stay connected. All they need is a library card.”
Patrons can check the availability of Chromebooks at their nearest branch by searching “Acer Chromebook” in the library’s online catalog at www.mdpls.org, calling 305-375-2665 or emailing customercare@mdpls.org.
Miami-Dade Public Libraries is also bringing Chromebooks into the community to further engage and provide residents with technology. Patrons can check out a Chromebook from the Library’s Bookmobile at stops throughout the County, including the following locations:

The Chromebooks are funded by a grant from the Federal Communications Commission’s Emergency Connectivity Fund authorized by Congress as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
The Library’s Mobile Device Lending Program also includes Wi-Fi hotspots that can connect up to 15 mobile devices to the internet at the same time and tablets with built-in wireless internet access and Wi-Fi capability. The Mobile Device Lending Program, along with the Library’s Drive-up Wi-Fi service at 22 library locations, which allows residents to connect to free Wi-Fi from the comfort of their vehicles, is part of the Library’s Community Internet Connectivity Initiative to provide more digital connectivity options for residents and equitable access to technology.
Residents who do not have a library card can sign up for one by visiting any library location or registering for an eCard (electronic card) online at eCard.mdpls.org. eCard holders will be asked to verify their address at the branch prior to checking out a mobile device.

MIAMI (March 29, 2022) — Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Miami-Dade County District 10 Commissioner Javier D. Souto will join the Miami-Dade Public Library System to celebrate the grand opening of the new Westchester Library Health and Wellness Information Center located at 9445 Coral Way, Miami, FL 33165, at noon on Saturday, April 2, 2022.
In addition to providing print and digital content and resources on health and wellness-related topics, the newly constructed, state-of-the-art 3,808-square-foot facility will be largely program-oriented, providing Miami-Dade County residents with a broad range of free events, presentations and activities on health topics from leading community partner health organizations and medical professionals, healthy cooking demonstrations using the center’s portable teaching kitchen, exercise classes and more, all aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle. The facility is also LEED-certified and has three electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
The center’s focus on health literacy will enhance health equity in Miami-Dade County, providing access to authoritative, relevant health and wellness information to everyone in the community.

Miami-Dade County continues to expand access to COVID-19 testing in response to the recent surge in demand and to help keep residents safe
MIAMI (January 07, 2022) — Miami-Dade County is again offering free take home rapid test kits at select Miami-Dade Public Library System locations as we continue to work to make tests as accessible as possible and to help keep our community safe. Residents can pick up test kits at eight library locations on Saturday, January 8 beginning at 7:30 a.m., while supplies last. There is a limit of up to two tests per household.
“We are doing everything possible to meet the increase in demand for testing as our residents seek to protect themselves and their families,” said Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “We continue to work hand-in-hand with the public to provide convenient access to tests and encourage families across Miami-Dade to continue taking the basic common-sense precautions that help keep all of us safe.”
Miami-Dade County has already completed distribution of approximately 225,000 take home rapid test kits through a collaboration between Miami-Dade Public Library System, Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Emergency Operations Center.
The following are the eight library locations where residents can pick up take home test kits on Saturday, January 8:
