This exhibit features a curated selection of 18 of the 64 works of art by the library’s Permanent Art Collection Cuban-American artist Alex Sánchez. Enjoy viewing a combination of acrylic and collage pieces that capture viewers with vibrant colors and compelling imagery. Sánchez incorporates classic iconography of art history from Vincent van Gogh, Tiziano Vecelli, Francis Bacon and Sandro Botticelli among others - bringing them into a world of organic movement that seems to bleed from the canvas. This interplay between the old and the new, the organic and the modern, the classic and the contemporary, serves to bring viewers into a world of contrast.

Alex Sánchez has had a passion for painting since he was four years old. At the age of 15, he held his first art showing with fellow well-known Cuban painters Wifredo Lam and Amelia Peláez, among others. During this time, he grew in popularity and was slowly recognized as an emerging artist in Cuba. At 16 years old, he settled in New York and began working for McCann Erickson, the largest advertising agency at the time. To improve his art skills, he also enrolled at the Pratt Institute. After a few years, his refined skills won him awards for his work as an illustrator, leading him to then become an art director and photographer, traveling throughout all five continents. After a very early retirement, Sánchez returned to the artistic world and fully dedicated himself to painting again. His works have been sold internationally for the last several years.

To enjoy more of Alex Sanchez's work, feel free to explore his digitized work in the Digital Collection
