In celebration of the award-winning series Martin's Footprints: Marches in Coconut Grove & Goulds currently on display at North Dade Regional Library, Free Family Portrait Day with the Titania Archives gives families the chance to get their portraits professionally taken by award-winning photographer Symone Titania Major. The Titania Archives is a digital archive created by Titania herself to celebrate and document the African American experience through oral and visual storytelling. Family portraits are a way to tell a story through history, kinship, identity, and time. It is through these photographs that we can stop time and remember our loved ones through a special lens of deeply rooted connections that will last for lifetimes. Portraits taken during this program will be available on the Titania Archives website at https://www.titaniaarchives.com/familyportraits.
A recipient of the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation’s 2021 Knight Arts Challenge Award, Martin’s Footprints: Marches in Coconut Grove & Goulds is a black and white photography series that documents the duality of two historical marches that took place in Miami during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a celebration of the women leaders who organized the protests in Coconut Grove and Goulds. It is a thank you to the community members who marched, used their voices, distributed drinks and food, took part in the online conversation and prayed for change.
