Community Quilting and Sewing Circle Showcase highlights the work of dozens of library patrons who came together under the guidance of local artist Pangea Kali Virga to craft two beautiful landscape quilts of South Florida ecosystems. The display has corresponding works by Pangea that highlight the various techniques taught and utilized by the students to create the two community quilts. These two quilts, In The Arms of The Everglades and If The Sacred Is A River Within Us, Let It Flow Like This Forever, were crafted by the Miami community over the course of six sewing circle sessions led by local sustainable fiber artist, Pangea Kali Virga, and hosted at the Miami Beach Regional YouMake space. The sewing circles taking place from August through December of 2024 welcomed dozens of participants with ages ranging from 2 to 80 who worked on dyeing the fabrics, cutting the patterns and motifs, pinning the elements together, and sewing the layers together to create two finished quilted landscapes. The landscapes depict and are inspired by various regional ecosystems in the Everglades as well as native plants and animals including the Anhinga bird, Julia butterfly, and Mangrove trees. The quilt borders take direct inspiration from various patchwork designs from the Miccosukkee. The materials for the two quilts were upcycled and repurposed from old military jackets, bed linens, clothing, net fruit packaging, vintage bridal lace, and more. All scraps leftover from the quilt making process will be further repurposed in new art works.
