This exhibition brings together experimental quilted works by seven South Florida fiber artists, each engaging the long history of quilting while expanding what the form can be. Showing the works of Lauren Baccus, Regina Durante Jestrow, Bex McCharen, Emily Peters, Carrie Sieh, Pangea Kali Virga, and Carrington Ware, these artists reimagine a centuries-old craft. Piecework Legacies brings together experimental quilted works by seven South Florida fiber artists, each engaging the long history of quilting while expanding what the form can be.
Quilts have been part of American material culture since the eighteenth century, serving both practical and expressive roles. They function as objects for warmth, storytelling, and community building, and as records of personal experiences.
Piecework Legacies showcases the work of Lauren Baccus, Regina Durante Jestrow, Bex McCharen, Emily Peters, Carrie Sieh, Pangea Kali Virga, and Carrington Ware. In these works, the artists present quilts as soft sculpture, multimedia assemblage, pastiches of personal and physical media, meditations, and large-scale narrative works, among other approaches. Many of the works on view incorporate reused or upcycled materials, continuing quilting’s longstanding relationship with material sustainability.
By reimagining traditional material, scale, technique and imagery, these artists demonstrate how a centuries-old craft continues to adapt to contemporary realities.
