The Freedmen's Bureau, established by Congress in 1865 was supervised and managed all matters relating to the refugees, freedmen, and lands abandoned or seized during the Civil War. The Bureau established a wealth of records which provide practical research tools for genealogy and family history researchers. About the Presenter
Dr. Ramona La Roche is a Cultural Heritage Informaticist. A seasoned Cultural Heritage professional working with galleries, libraries, archives, museums, repositories, Digital Humanities projects, Virtual and Augmented Reality platforms which focus on South Carolina Gullah, Florida, Caribbean, African diasporic historical and family research, content development, art education/digital literacy, and in-services. She earned a Ph.D. in Cultural Heritage Informatics, Communications and Information Science from the University of South Carolina, an M.Ed. in Divergent Learning from Columbia College (South Carolina) and a BFA in Photography, Creative Arts Therapy from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She serves as Librarian Supervisor of Adult Information Services at the Broward County African American Research Library and Cultural Center, and consults as a divergent education specialist providing DEI training, and special event programming.
About the Division of Special Collections & Archives
Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Division of Special Collections & Archives holds rare and irreplaceable historical materials for the benefit of the public and scholarly community. They oversee the Helen Muir Florida Collection, 16mm Film Collection, Cuban Collection of Rare Books & Ephemera, Genealogy Collection, Vasari Project archive, and Rare & Antiquarian books from as early as the 17th century. The Division's primary goal is to provide the public with the contents of the vault at their request. Its collections include rare books, original manuscripts, over 18,000 photographs, prints, artifacts, audiovisual resources, and electronic media.
